Blurb (Ruby on Rails SF startup) is hiring

I don’t know if there’s a TON of great Ruby-on-Rails jobs out there, but this looks pretty interesting, I’ve personally used the Blurb service and application and it’s really quite impressive… it’s sort of like the books you can make from within iPhoto, but taken a couple of orders of magnitude more powerful. The finished products aren’t too cheap (well, neither are the iPhoto books), but are quite nice. I don’t have any idea how much RoR there really is to do, seems like a lot of the work is in their client, but hey, someone can contact them and find out :)

Here’s the posting, cribbed from this post at Valleywag’s jobs section (yeah, I know, it’s a little weird they even have one… what is the catchphrase, “reaching more rumor-loving engineers than Craigslist”?):

Nifty photos badge for Yahoo! Harry Potter brandsite

For the 2nd brandsite, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, (you will recall that Pirates of Caribbean was the first), we had a nifty little badge made up with photos in a slideshow… see whatcha think!

How long until GOOG buys 37signals?

Wow, just saw this today: Google Applications. Yes, I know they had all of these offerings individually, but didn’t know there was a “professional bundle” sort of thing, with support. For $50/seat/year, I don’t think microsoft is going to be too worried… yet.

Now, how to make that offering a lot more compelling? Match it up with the awesomeness of the 37signals apps, maybe? I think so. That would be worth $50/seat/year for any small business I’d run, especially if they continue to improve the Docs and Calc apps. (Calc especially… it’s “ok”, but really could use to be a lot better before it can supplant Excel for anything but the most mundane small sheets.) [And don't get me started on OOO, it's really no better.]

GOOG M&A–are you listening? OK, not to me, since only 4 of my friends even randomly read my blog :), but I hope this has occurred to them.

Sorry, can’t blog… playing Wii Sports!

Best. Father’s Day. Present. Evar!!

Extremely interesting documentary from Denmark about copyright and Intellectual Property

I downloaded a documentary last night called “Good Copy, Bad Copy“, about copyright and the realities of the world today. It is non-preachy, extremely well-put-together, and fantastically entertaining if you’re at all interested in the subject (I very much am). It’s got some exposition bits, but largely, doesn’t try to beat you over the head with the concepts, instead just starts telling illustrative stories… and telling them well.

Especially fascinating I thought was the part about Nollywood, the Nigerian film industry. They have no copyright laws in Nigeria, but are apparently the largest (by number of films produced per year) film industry in the world, surpassing Hollywood and Bollywood. Their model is straightforward, works within the confines of the market realities, and is appears highly successful.
